Is it possible to use slate tiles for a kitchen worktop and would this be a durable solution?
Hello Gioia
Slate 'tiles' have been successfully used as a worktop covering on many occasions. You'll need to ensure you choose your slate carefully as not all 'slates' are the same and may not be fit for your purpose. We are stockists of Brazilian slate as it is a market leader when considering quality and consistency. Brazilian slate tends to be beautifully flat even when riven, so provides an aesthetically pleasing, as well as a durable, practical surface covering.
Tiles with an average of 10mm thickness will need to be fixed to a suitable, rigid base and we'd recommend using a two-component grout such as Mapei's Kerapoxy. This product is suitable for both fixing and the grouting of our slate and is compliant with the HACCP food safety system and the EC regulations regarding hygiene and foodstuffs.
I hope this helps you Gioia but please call our office on 01283 730388 should you have any further queries.
