Can you advise exactly how I should lay my riven slate tiles outdoors?

The Question

Can the Riven slate be used on a vertical surface externally. If so how would you recomend the application. The backing would be blockwork. Thank you

The Answer

Hello Marcus

The riven slate can be used on walls as well as floors both internally and externally. On a blockwork surface (provided the wall is relatively flat), the Granfix 1 part fastset flexible adhesive will be sufficient applied with a 6mm notched trowel to leave a full bed of adhesive. PLEASE NOTE: The dot and dab method of application in not recommended for adhering tiles.

However, if it is that you are tiling above first floor height in an external application, BS5835-2 states that it is necessary to mechanically fix the tiles if the tile surface is larger than 0.1m2 in area (318x318mm), if you asked your tiling professional he will be able to give you further advice on this.
