Should we lay patio grey slate 20 mm slabs on dry sand/gravel or should they be set into a sand/cement wet mix?

Should we lay patio grey slate 20 mm slabs on dry sand/gravel or should they be set into a sand/cement wet mix?

Hello Alan

Thank you very much for your question.

Brazilian grey pavers 20-30mm thick are suited for installation onto a sufficiently prepared type 1 MOT base. The 'sand/cement dry mix' or 'wet mix' method of fixing is really one of preference of the fixer or determined by the project specifications.

Generally, if wet mix is the preferred method of fixing, its recommended to add a plasticiser to the mix such as Mapei's Planicrete. Planicrete, is a synthetic rubber latex which improves the adhesion of cement mixes.

For specific advice on fixing and the preparation of your project, we would advise seeking the advice of a professional trades person who will be able to offer suggestions following a sit survey.
